Okere-Urhobo royal families rebuke Louis Okumagba, seek IGP’s Intervention

Okere-Urhobo royal families rebuke Louis Okumagba, seek IGP’s Intervention

  • Move to prevent monumental communal war between Itsekiri and  Urhobo

Royal families in Okere-Urhobo have condemned the role of Chief Louis Okumagba in the 30 plots released by the Delta State government to the Olodi, Oki and Ighogbadu families of Warri in the Okere – Urhobo kingdom of Delta State.

They described it as a negative development and a minus for peace and development in Delta State.

In a letter titled: ‘’Attempt / efforts to cause communal war, fanning the embers of communal dispute, conduct likely to cause breach of peace and criminal defamation of characters of our clients; Olodi, Oki and Ighogbadu families of Warri in the Okere – Urhobo kingdom of Delta State, all committed by Mr. Louis Okumagba – a call to investigate the allegation herein, the families urged the Inspector General of Police to use his good office to investigate allegations against Louis Okumagba, so as to prevent a monumental communal war/crisis between Itsekiri and the Urhobo of Okere Urhobo Kingdom.

’’God forbid a repetition of what happened in 1997/98 in Okere-Urhobo Kingdom’’

Counsel to the Olodi, Oki and Ighogbadu families of Warri in the Okere – Urhobo Kingdom, L O. Egboyi & CO said in the 1974/76, the then government of Mid-Western Nigeria acquired a part or portion of our client’s land for public purpose.

‘’In 2017, the Delta State government gave part of this acquired land to Messrs. Seriviri Nig. Ltd. for the purpose of partnership (Leisure Park) with the state government, covered by a certificate of Occupancy. Considering the size of the land given to Seriviri Nig. Ltd, for the partnership, it could not utilize the entire land. So, it entered into agreement with our client family, wherein, it released 30 plots thereof back to the family – our clients’’

The Olodi, Oki and Ighogbadu families of Warri are made up of the popular Okumagba family of Warri, Okere- Urhobo kingdom.

‘’Our clients are the owners of all the land in the entire Okere-Urhobo kingdom Warri. Certain Mr. Louis Okumagba who is the black sheep of the family started to foment trouble, disturbing and threatening Seriviri Nig. Ltd, with thugs and dangerous weapons which led to his arrest in 2019 to the Police Force Headquarters’, Abuja. After being granted bail by the police, the suspect (Mr. Louis Okumagba) rushed to file a fundamental Human Rights action against the Police, at the Delta State High Court, sitting in Warri. The action stalled the prosecution of the suspect (Mr. Louis) by the Police’’.

The families said the suit of the suspect against the Police was dismissed by the Delta State High Court, sitting in Warri, with a specific order of the Court directing the police to arrest and prosecute the suspect (Mr Louis Okumagba).

‘’While the Police were looking for the suspect for arrest and prosecution as directed by the Court, the same suspect went to social media (Opera news) to declare that “there will be looming danger of war/crisis between the Itsekiri and Urhobos”, thereby inciting, promoting and instigating communal war between the two peaceful co-existing communities of Itsekiri and Urhobo’’.

This incitement, according to the families, created several apprehensions in the minds of locals, which has affected the hitherto peace that reigned and pervaded the two communities.

‘’Furthermore, the suspect posted on the same social media that some named members of our clients namely, Chief Gideon Okumagba, Stanley Oki, Chief Victor Okumagba, Engr. Prince Ojuvwu Okumagba and others, sent assassins to his house to kill him, but he escaped by the whiskers. He confirmed that he had a one-on-one confrontation with the assassins, who confirmed the named members of our clients above, as the people who commissioned them to eliminate him’’.

The legal practitioners described Olodi, Oki and Ighogbadu as bunch of responsible families

‘’Olodi, Oki and Ighogbadu families are known throughout Nigeria for their peaceful disposition. The named individuals are distinguished and respected members of the Okumagba family and the Nigeria Society. Our clients therefore take the allegation of hiring assassins by its members very seriously, especially in this era of Security challenges in the country’’.

The families also deplored the actions of Louis Okumagba and urged the Inspector General of Police to use his good offices to investigate the allegations and anyone found culpable to be brought to book.

‘’So, if investigation reveal the named individuals as assassins or connected to the attempt assassination of the suspect, as he alleged, they should be so indicted and prosecuted. But otherwise, the law on criminal defamation as enshrined in the Criminal Code and status in Nigeria are still very potent and alive. We assure you of our client’s co-operation with your men in the investigation of this petition’’.

Our clients are the owners of all the land in the entire Okere-Urhobo kingdom Warri.

In 1974/76, the then government of Mid-Western Nigeria acquired a part or portion of our Client’s land for public purpose.

In 2017, the Delta State government gave part of this acquired land to Messrs. Seriviri Nig. Certain Mr. Louis Okumagba who is the black sheep of the family started to foment trouble, disturbing and threatening Seriviri Nig. After being granted bail by the police, the suspect (Mr. Louis Okumagba) rushed to file a fundamental Human Right action against the Police, at the Delta State High Court, sitting in Warri. This incitement has created several apprehension in the minds of locals, which apprehension has affected the hitherto peace that reigned and pervaded the two communities.

Furthermore, the suspect posted on the same social media that some named members of our Clients namely; Chief Gideon Okumagba, Stanley Oki, Chief Victor Okumagba, Engr. Recommit to transparency, declare your assets, SERAP tells Buhari

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to “recommit to transparency, and demonstrate leadership by publicly committing to publish your asset declaration at the end of your tenure of office, and encouraging other members of your administration to do the same.”

SERAP also urges him to “direct the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) to take immediate steps to expeditiously, diligently, effectively and fairly prosecute all outstanding high-profile corruption cases currently being handled by his office.”

Buhari had stated in his Independence Day address that “I have promised to bequeath a country where all citizens have equal opportunities to achieve their lives. We have made significant progress in the eradication of deeply entrenched corruption that permeates all facets of our national development.”

But in an open letter dated 1 October 2022 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization said: “Contrary to your Independence Day address, grand corruption has continued to deny millions of Nigerians equal opportunities.”

SERAP said, “promoting transparency and combating corruption and ensuring full and effective respect for the rule of law would send a strong signal of your commitment to leave behind a legacy of transparency and accountability.”

According to SERAP, “millions of people are falling into preventable poverty, and live in a continuing state of anxiety and insecurity.”

The letter, read in part: “promoting transparency, combating corruption and obeying the rule of law is vital if your administration is not to leave behind a legacy of impunity and an assault against the rule of law.”

“We hope that the next few months will show your administration’s commitment to consistently uphold transparency and accountability, in order to create a rule of law-friendly environment that would make Nigerians safer.”

“There remain longstanding and grave concerns regarding widespread cases of grand corruption involving high-ranking government officials, and systemic corruption in ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), and persistent attacks on the rule of law.”

“The reality today is that there is massive corruption at the highest level of government, and in ministries, departments and agencies, with a corrosive impact on Nigerians.”

“The indicators of bad governance and mismanagement of the country’s natural wealth and resources should serve as proof of the need for your government to reinforce and recommit to the fight against corruption.”

“Public officials still use political power to enrich themselves without considering the public good. In several states of the federation, and federal ministries, corruption is taking place every day and every hour.”

“Corruption continues to directly affect the lives and well-being of millions of Nigerians across the country, and to erode public trust in public institutions and leaders, threatening the foundation of our democracy.”

“The best measure of a country’s progress toward transparency and accountability is a total obedience to the rule of law.”

“The law ought to command the highest levels of respect by for example, the government immediately obeying orders and judgments of competent courts. No country in which official positions and orders claim a place in people’s minds higher than the law can truly be said to fight corruption.”

“SERAP urges you to recommit to transparency and accountability, and the rule of law, and obey all outstanding court judgments that would improve the ability of your government to fulfil your promises to Nigerians.”

“Consistent with the principles of transparency and accountability, SERAP also urges you to encourage all presidential candidates to also publicly declare their assets ahead of the 2023 general elections.”

“According to our information, details of about 103 high-profile corruption cases being handled by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] were reportedly made available in 2017 to the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice upon request.”

“Also, the case files of 15 high-profile corruption suspects are allegedly missing. The missing files are among the 23 cases reportedly sent by the now defunct Special Presidential Investigation Panel on the Recovery of Public Property, [SPIP] in 2019 to Mr Malami, and include some charges of fraud involving some former governors and senators, non-declaration of assets and possession of foreign accounts cases.”

“The rule of law crisis is illustrated by your government’s persistent failure to obey decisions of Nigerian courts; failure to consistently combat corruption and push for transparency in asset declarations by high-ranking government officials, and the failure to protect Nigerians’ right to life and security.”

“There are several judgments that your government is yet to obey, including the judgment by Justice Hadiza Rabiu Shagari ordering your government to tell Nigerians about the stolen asset it allegedly recovered to date, with details of the amounts recovered.”

“Another judgment, by Justice Mohammed Idris [as he then was], ordered your government to publish details on the spending of stolen funds recovered since the return of democracy in 1999.”

“The judgment, by Justice Chuka Austine Obiozor, ordered your government to publish details of payments of billions of naira to allegedly corrupt electricity contractors and companies since 1999.”

“Your government is yet to obey the judgment by Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo. The judgment ordered your government to challenge the legality of states’ life pension laws and to recover pensions already collected by ex-governors now serving as ministers and members of the National Assembly.”

PRESS RELEASE

SANWO-OLU, ADEBOYE TASKS NIGERIANS ON PEACE

  • Greater Lagos agenda on course, says Lagos Governor

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, have called on Nigerians to continuously work and pray for peace in the nation.

They made the call on Sunday at the Redeemed Christians Church of God (RCCG) October Thanksgiving Service and Special Prayer Session for all State Governors and Deputy Governors tagged “Perfect Peace in the Land” held at the church corporate headquarters in Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

Governor Sanwo-Olu while addressing the large congregation at the service urged Nigerians, including Lagosians to continue to pray for leaders in Nigeria and for peace to reign in the land with an assurance to believe that greater things are ahead.

The Governor, who attended the programme with his wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu and other dignitaries which include the representatives of Governors Gboyega Oyetola (Osun) and Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), said the Greater Lagos agenda of his administration, which had brought about infrastructural development across Lagos State, is on course and more of it would be delivered.

He said: “This service taking place a Sunday after the Independence Day anniversary is very important. And I think our GO (Pastor Adeboye) has said it all. We need perfect peace in our country but for us to have that perfect peace; we also need to have peace from individuals. It is we the citizens that make the country. It is not just about a metaphorical country; it is the people on the ground that truly make a country.

“We need to have that perfect peace in how we live our lives mentally, physically, financially, morally and all of it, and it is only when that happens that it can affect the country. He (Pastor Adeboye) has also encouraged all of us that we need to continually pray for our leaders. People are made up of the kind of leaders they have. So, it is really a partnership by ensuring that the citizens play their roles and leaders also play their roles.

“For me, it is another clarion call that it might not be perfect but there is light at the end of the tunnel. And for us in Lagos, we are grateful because this is the most peaceful part of the country. We don’t want to take it for granted and that is why we have come here to thank God, to also appeal and pray to God for that peace to continue to reign.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu also assured the people of Lagos State that his administration will continue to do its best in delivering dividends of democracy and infrastructural development to ensure that Lagos State remains home to all.

He said: “The 62nd Independence anniversary is an important time for all of us to also come together as Lagosians. A lot of things are happening in our state; not just peace, there is infrastructural renewal every day.  Even while disruption is going on let us be patient with the government because the commitment to make Lagos a lot bigger for each and every one of us is on course and we all can see it.

“For us in Lagos State is to continue to see the Greater Lagos in our lives. It is for us to pray that the peace and the infrastructural development that is taking place in our state will continue. I know around you, you can see that there are some bits of disruption. If you get to Apapa Road Junction, Yaba and Ikeja, there are bits of disruption there because of the train we are doing and the bridges we are constructing.

“If you go to Ikorodu, Epe and other places, you will see some disruptions; it is because we want some positive things to happen. The Greater Lagos is on course. The Greater Lagos will not be retarded; it will not be stopped. Don’t give up. I want to assure you that greater things and bigger things are ahead of us. My prayer and my wish are that as I stand here as your governor today, October 2, 2022, I will also stand here as your governor in October 2023.

In his sermon, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christians Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, who took his sermon from a Bible passage, 1 Corinthians 7:13-14, prayed for perfect peace in Nigeria as well as every home.

Pastor Adeboye, who prayed that God would heal the land and intervene in various issues affecting the country negatively, urged the people to prepare to join him very soon for fasting and prayer for the country.

He called on Nigerians to pray for their rulers and stop criticism so that God would continue to guide them aright if they want peace and to be able to overcome the storm.

The General Overseer prayed that all the enemies of Nigeria would be defeated so that the people can have peace and the Controller of storms would speak peace to the nation.
